An earthquake in Indonesia measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale hit the city of Yogyakarta, 400 kilometres east of Jakarta on May 27. Over 3,000 people are reported dead and over 5,200 people suffered injuries. Over 3,000 homes have collapsed and over 100,000 people have been left homeless.
The Indonesia Red Cross (Palang Merah Indonesia/PMI) has responded to the situation and is currently assisting casualties. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has launched an emergency appeal for $10.8 million to support the PMI in providing assistance to survivors.
The Canadian Red Cross is supporting the preliminary appeal of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies with an initial contribution of $600,000.
